Block is officially bringing Bitcoin payments to Square, and this rollout is happening in late 2025. The company announced that millions of merchants will soon be able to accept Bitcoin payments directly through their existing Square systems, which should significantly boost Bitcoin adoption while also reducing crypto transaction fees for businesses.

How Block’s New Bitcoin Payment System Actually Works

Right now, Block is using the Lightning Network to power these new Bitcoin payments on Square, and this technology enables near-instant transactions with much lower crypto transaction fees than traditional Bitcoin transactions. Merchants can accept Bitcoin payments through their current Square hardware, and the system automatically handles all the complex stuff like exchange rate calculations and transaction confirmations.

Miles Suter, Bitcoin Product Lead at Block, had this to say:

“Block has long been a champion of Bitcoin, focused on making it more accessible and usable in our everyday lives. Rolling out a native Bitcoin experience to millions of sellers brings us one step closer to that goal. When a coffee shop or retail store can accept Bitcoin through Square, small businesses get paid faster, and get to keep more of their revenue. This is about economic empowerment for merchants who like to have options when it comes to accepting payments.”

Timeline and What Merchants Can Expect

This new system builds on top of Square’s Bitcoin Conversions feature that launched in 2024, and together these create what Block calls a seamless experience. For customers, paying with Bitcoin is as simple as scanning a QR code at checkout, while merchants benefit from faster settlements and lower processing costs.

    Suter also stated:

“We believe in an open, decentralized, fair, fast, and low-cost money system for everyone, and that’s exactly what we want to bring to Square sellers.”

Why This Matters for Bitcoin Adoption

Block’s approach to Bitcoin payments on Square addresses some of the biggest barriers that have been holding back Bitcoin adoption among small businesses. The integration eliminates technical complexity and reduces crypto transaction fees through Lightning Network technology, which was showcased at Bitcoin 2025 in Las Vegas where attendees could actually try the system firsthand.

This Square BTC integration represents a major milestone for Bitcoin adoption because it brings cryptocurrency payments to millions of merchants without requiring them to learn new systems or buy additional hardware. The initiative supports Bitcoin’s original vision as outlined in the Bitcoin whitepaper, while providing merchants with the payment flexibility they want and the reliability they need.

By integrating Bitcoin payments into existing Square infrastructure, Block eliminates the traditional barriers while maintaining the ease of use that merchants expect from their payment processors.
