Some of the biggest drivers of the ongoing market rally that began early last year are the advances in artificial intelligence (AI). These next-generation algorithms and the semiconductors that power them could spark a wave of increased productivity. The potential to profit from these advances has fueled rapid adoption of AI, which has sent purchases of semiconductors soaring. However, the chip industry could be among the first to feel the impact of the just-announced dockworkers’ strike. With that as a backdrop, AI chip specialist Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) slumped 3.9%, memory and storage chipmaker Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) tumbled 3.9%, semiconductor specialist Broadcom…
By Ben Klayman, David Shepardson DETROIT/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -European automakers are the most likely to be affected by the dockworkers strike at U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports because they rely heavily on those locations, but a longer walkout could prove “debilitating” to the entire sector, industry officials and analysts said. The dockworkers began their first large-scale stoppage in nearly 50 years early on Tuesday, halting the flow of about half the nation’s ocean shipping. The International Longshoremen’s Association union representing 45,000 port workers had been negotiating with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group for a new six-year…
The Ethereum network is preparing for the launch of its next hard fork upgrade, “Pectra.” On Thursday, the Ethereum development team revealed that it plans to split the Pectra upgrade in two. According to developers, Pectra was becoming too ambitious to ship all at once, and splitting the upgrade reduces the risk of bugs in the new system. The developers decided that eight Ethereum improvement proposals (EIPs) would be included in the first package. The first package will include EIP-7702, aimed at improving the user experience of wallets. The second package is up to be changed over the next few months,…

Although every state in the U.S. has its own minimum wage laws for before and after tips, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) stipulates that the federal minimum wage for employees who receive tips for their work must be $2.13 per hour. Additionally, that minimum wage combined with tips should amount to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour unless the state requires otherwise. Forging an unlikely friendship between shark and dog, Mark Cuban recently praised canines as catching on faster than Silicon Valley’s latest darling. Tech’s most recent puppy, generative AI, has some house training to do, according to the billionaire investor. “I think smart puppies are smarter than AI is today or in the near future,” Cuban said in a Wired interview to assumedly wagging tails. Cuban asked the interviewer, Lauren Goode, if she’d trust a seeing-eye dog or a self-driving car more to take her three blocks on the condition that she was blind. It’s perhaps one of the lesser-known hypothetical…
By Nathan Gomes (Reuters) -Top U.S. automakers reported a fall in their third-quarter sales on Tuesday, hurt by fewer selling days and weaker consumer spending amid inflationary challenges and higher interest rates. Carmakers have relied on crossovers and pickup trucks for years to drive the bulk of their sales, but that growth is starting to sputter as customers work with tighter budgets because of economic uncertainties. General Motors (NYSE:) reported a 2.2% fall in quarterly sales, as demand for some of its big pickup trucks such as its best-selling Silverado weakened. Crosstown rival Ford (NYSE:) is expected to post weaker…
